The three men, two being from up North, worked with CORE (The Congress of Racial Equality). This was an area (like many others) that was extremely segregated at this time. Many people were in the Deep South to promote desegregation and progression of registered African-American voters.

The disappearances of the three men hit newspaper stands and televisions all over the country. Why? Because at this time, people wouldn't care about an African American civil rights worker going missing, but when two White civil rights workers couldn't be found, it captivated the attention of the nation. This is an unfortunate reality, but it is reflective of the time period that these murders occurred in.
